Viva Kidney & Urinary Health

Viva Kidney & Urinary Health is a primary-care program in Doral for adults who want to keep their kidneys healthy or need help with common bladder problems. We see early kidney disease and abnormal kidney test results.

About this program

We check the kidneys of people with diabetes or high blood pressure. We also care for urinary infection symptoms and bladder leakage. To start, book a visit online or by phone.

Visits to review results can often be done by video. A provider reviews your symptoms, blood pressure, blood sugar, medicines, and past results. Then your provider explains what your kidney numbers mean in plain words.

Confirm test availability, sampling location, assay suitability, and cost before nonurgent testing; outside laboratory coordination may be needed. Kidney and urine tests are coordinated with an outside laboratory. Care may include a follow-up schedule, a check of your medicines, blood pressure and blood sugar goals, care for simple urinary infections, and bladder-training steps.

This is not a kidney specialist, urology, or dialysis service. If kidney numbers drop fast, the disease is advanced, or the cause is not clear, your provider sets up a referral and tracks it. Please bring your medicine list and past lab results.

Frequently asked questions

My lab report says my eGFR is low. What does that mean?

eGFR is an estimate of how well your kidneys filter blood. One low number does not always mean kidney disease, so your provider usually repeats the test and checks your urine for protein. Together you review blood pressure, blood sugar, and medicines that can affect the kidneys, and set a follow-up schedule.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure. Why should I check my kidneys?

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common causes of kidney disease, and early kidney damage usually has no symptoms. Simple blood and urine tests can find it early. Your provider uses those results to adjust blood pressure and blood sugar goals and to review medicines, which can help protect kidney function over time.

Can you treat a urinary tract infection?

Yes, for adults with an uncomplicated infection. Your provider asks about your symptoms, checks a urine sample, and may prescribe an antibiotic class that fits your history and allergies. Fever with back pain, pregnancy, infections that keep coming back, or blood in the urine need a closer look and sometimes a urology referral. Blood you can see in the urine should be checked promptly. Do not wait to see if it goes away.

Is bladder leakage something I just have to live with?

No. Leakage when you cough or laugh, or sudden urges to go, are common and often improve with care. Your provider reviews fluids, caffeine, medicines, and bowel habits, and can teach bladder-training steps. When needed, your provider coordinates a referral to pelvic-floor therapy or a urology specialist and follows your progress.

Do you offer dialysis or kidney specialist care?

No. This program is primary care. It focuses on early detection, monitoring, and protecting kidney function. If your kidney function drops quickly, your disease is advanced, or the cause is unclear, your provider coordinates a referral to a kidney specialist and keeps tracking your results with you.

Which medicines can affect my kidneys?

Some common medicines, including over-the-counter pain relievers in the NSAID class, some supplements, and certain prescription medicines, can affect the kidneys or need a dose change when kidney function is low. Bring every medicine and supplement you take. Your provider reviews the list with you, and you should not stop a prescribed medicine without talking to your provider.

Urgent symptoms

  • fever or chills with back or side pain
  • urinating very little or not at all
  • not being able to pass urine with a full, painful bladder
  • sudden swelling of the legs or face with shortness of breath
  • new confusion, vomiting, or extreme weakness with urinary symptoms
  • If any of these happen, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

When we refer

This program provides primary-care kidney protection, not nephrology or dialysis. Kidney function that drops quickly, advanced kidney disease, an unclear cause, or serious complications lead to a referral to a kidney specialist. Blood in the urine, trouble emptying the bladder, infections that keep coming back without a clear reason, or a suspected structural problem need further evaluation, often with urology.
